Online Application
All jobs have to be applied for online, through the Alowishus careers portal.
After filling in a questionnaire and uploading a resume, applicant will be asked to provide a short 1-minute video introduction of themselves which is required to complete the application process.
Video Screening
The intro videos will be sent to a designated email account that you can access to screen the applicants. Please not that only applicants who submitted a video will be invited to the next stage of the application process.
What we are looking for in the video is:
- an upbeat personality to match our fun, fast & friendly culture
- a respectable, pleasant appearance
- well-presented and thought through content
- good reasoning for why they will be a great addition to the team
All applicants who match the above, will then be invited to a group interview via email.
Group Interview
At the group interview it is important to create a friendly, vibrant atmosphere. The aim of the group interview is to see how people perform in front of others and how they interact with each other. We also want to share Alowishus’s values, mission and vision with the group to see if they align with their personal values and goals.
The group interview is about filtering out personalities that will fit in with our fun, fast and friendly culture and to fill the group in on what we stand for, here at Alowishus.
Give everyone a name tag so you can clearly see their names.
Below are the steps to follow during your group interview:
- Thank the group for coming and acknowledging their efforts on filming a video & getting to this round of the interviews. (Ask the group to high five the person next to them. This relaxes the group and helps them to get comfortable in the environment.)
2. Introduce yourself, the role you have in Alowishus & why you love working here/ why you started a franchise.
3. Intro of applicants – Ask the applicants to go round the room and introduce themselves & their favourite colour & why.
4. This section is your chance to tell the group about our culture as part of the Alowishus team, inform them on the way we do business with our customers, how we work in our team environment and also how we in invest in our staff on a professional and personal level. Here are some points you can touch on:

- Our Vision – to be a place for people to meet and develop relationships in the community
- Our Interest in investing & growing our staff
5. It’s now time to go through the desolation phase with the group. This part is to make clear to the group the standards we expect of our team as a whole and as individuals.
- When working at Alowishus your not just starting and finishing your shift and going home
- Not just doing the tasks required for your job role
- Uncomfortable conversations with customers & sometimes staff
- Staying back
7. 1.Ask the group to take a moment to think about what they are passionate about in their life.
2. Ask the group to turn to the person next to them and share what they are passionate about.
4. Ask if there is anyone in the group that would like to share their passion.
5. High five the person next to you
8. Buzzer Game
Number the applicants- 1-3 depending on how many in the group.
Ask all the numbers ones to answer a scenario questions one by one, then the number two’s a different question & so on.
Customer complaint- Coffee To Cold
Senario- You are walking through the cafe and a customer grabs you aside to tell you their coffee is too cold. What would you do?
Wrong Order- Waiting Time
Senario- Its a busy day in the cafe and a customer has approached you saying they have been waiting for 40 mins and still have not received their meal, they are quite annoyed. How will you handle this situation?
Delegation- Dirty Table
Senario- You are working on the register this day & you spot a table that is full of dishes, and a family is wanting to sit at this table, you can leave the register as you have a line of customers to serve. What would you do in this situation?
9. Final Questions
- If you could have dinner with one celebrity, who would it be?
- IF you were an animal what would you be and why?
- If your best friend were here, what would they say is the best thing about being your friend?
10. Decision Time
Leave the candidates to chat among themselves while you decide who goes onto the next interview round. Let them know who goes through on this day.
What we are looking for in the group interview:
- A friendly, confident and professional attitude
- The ability to interact with the other applicants and the interviewer in a natural manner
- Authenticity – we want to hire people who are genuine and real
1-on-1 Interview
The aim of the 1-on-1 interview is to get a deeper understanding of where the individual applicants see themselves fitting in with the team and where they see themselves a few years down the track.
The group interview is designed to tell them about us as a business, whereas the 1-on-1 interview’s focus should be on the applicant. It’s important to not ‘interrogate’ the candidate with these questions but to have a casual conversation.
Here are some questions you might want to ask:
- What would you like to ask us ?
- If you could work on a project for any company in the world what would that be?
- If you could create a role for yourself in Alowishus what would the ideal role look like?
- Where do you see yourself in 2 years time?
- How do you think working at Alowishus can help you reach this?
- Do you see this as a job or as a career path?
- What type of personality type are you?
- What things do you not like to do?
- What do you think you would find challenging working here?
- What hours are you looking for ? (day/night, weekends)
3-hour Trial
The aim of the 3-hour trial shift is to see how the applicant performs as part of the team and as an individual.
Regardless of the chosen position, the applicant is put on the team as a cafe runner for the trial.
For the entire shift the applicant is given 3 tasks to focus on:
1. Customer interaction – Greeting every customer as they enter and saying good as they leave
2. Clearing and wiping tables within 30 seconds after customers leaving the table
3. Delivering food and beverages to tables in a fast, efficient manner
It is important to solely focus on the three tasks outlined above, without overwhelming them with other tasks and processes of the business.
What we are looking for in the trial:
- Understand & follow instructions
- Quality of questions
- The speed in which tasks are performed
- Problem solving skills and level of initiative
- Interaction with customers & team members
Final Decision
After the trial you will have a good understanding for weather the applicant is the right fit for your team.
Three questions need to be asked after the trial
- How do you think you went ?
- Can you see yourself working for the team?
- What do you think you could do better in the future?
If you have decided to not take them on bored you then need to give feedback and send them on there way.
